The 1981 Mazda RX-7 GSL is the top-tier, luxury-performance version of Mazda's iconic first-generation ("FB") rotary sports car. The 1981 model year marked a significant mid-cycle refresh for the platform, introducing updated styling and enhanced mechanical hardware that cemented the car's legendary status among driving enthusiasts.
The GSL package transformed the lightweight RX-7 into a more mature, premium Grand Tourer:
- Four-Wheel Disc Brakes: Unlike the base S and mid-tier GS trims that used rear drum brakes, the GSL gained responsive, fade-resistant rear disc brakes.
- Limited-Slip Differential: A clutch-type rear limited-slip differential (LSD) came standard, significantly improving traction and cornering stability.
- Premium Cabin: The interior was upgraded with optional leather seating, a removable sunroof, power windows, cruise control, and a premium audio system.
