The 1981 Honda Accord marks the historic final model year of the highly influential first-generation Accord. Originally introduced to the market in 1976 as a larger, more upscale alternative to the Civic, the 1981 variant represents the absolute peak refinement of Honda's early engineering before a complete second-generation redesign arrived for 1982.
What Made the 1981 Model Special
- The Luxurious SE Trim: The most notable update for 1981 was the introduction of the top-tier Special Edition (SE) sedan. This was the most expensive Honda produced up to that date, featuring real Novillo leather seats and power windows.
- Premium Standard Amenities: Unlike bare-bones American compacts of the era, the 1981 Accord LX and base models came generously packed with luxury-for-the-time features like a quartz clock, power steering, rear window wiper/washer, an AM/FM stereo, and fully adjustable dashboard vents.
- Reworked Instrumentation: The instrument clusters were redesigned for 1981 to replace old textual warning indicators with cleaner, universally recognizable graphic warning icons.
