The 1997 Acura NSX Open Top (M6)-officially known as the NSX-T (Targa)-is highly revered by collectors because 1997 marked the first major mechanical refresh of the first-generation Japanese supercar. This specific configuration combines the open-air driving experience with the highly sought-after drivetrain upgrades introduced that model year.
The 1997 model year brought a massive leap in mechanical capability for manual-equipped models:
- The Engine: Upgraded from the previous 3.0L to a 3.2-liter C32B DOHC V6 featuring dual overhead camshafts and Honda's signature VTEC variable valve timing.
- Power Output: Boosted by 20 horsepower for a total of 290 hp and 224 lb-ft of torque. (Note: Automatic variants were stuck with the older 252 hp 3.0L engine).
- The Transmission: The "M6" designation stands for the brand-new 6-speed close-ratio manual transmission, which replaced the original 5-speed unit to offer shorter gears and better acceleration.
- Performance Figures: Capable of launching from 0 to 60 mph in roughly 4.7 to 5.0 seconds with a top speed capability of 168 mph.
Chassis and Styling Features
- Removable Targa Roof: The "Open Top" configuration features a lightweight, body-colored removable roof panel that clips out easily and stores snugly in a dedicated holder under the rear glass canopy, above the mid-engine bay.
- Classic Aesthetics: The 1997 model retains the iconic, fighter-jet-inspired cockpit ergonomics and the signature pop-up headlights before the factory shifted to fixed headlights in 2002.
- Bigger Brakes: Stopping power was significantly upgraded for 1997 with 6-to-7 percent larger-diameter ventilated disc brakes and an improved 4-channel Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS).
- All-Aluminum Construction: Despite the structural reinforcements required for the Targa top and the heavier 6-speed gearbox, advanced new aluminum alloys kept the vehicle weight down to a lean 3,090 lbs.
The 1997 NSX-T is a highly prized collector vehicle due to its low production numbers (only 338 units were built for the North American market that year).
This Particular NSX has been a part of the Duncan Imports collection since 2017.
