Moving away from the heavy Ford Mustang-influenced styling of the first generation, the 1978 model introduced a more aerodynamic, European-inspired aesthetic. The redesign was highly acclaimed, earning Motor Trend's "Import Car of the Year" award for 1978.
The Liftback variant was highly praised for its unique blend of sports-coupé styling and wagon-like utility:
