The 1993 Subaru Sambar is a highly sought-after, fifth-generation Japanese "Kei" vehicle famous for its rear-engine layout, unique four-cylinder powertrain, and exceptional space efficiency. Available as both a regular mini-truck (KS4 chassis) and a micro-van (KV4 chassis), it is widely imported worldwide as a nimble workhorse, quirky daily commuter, or off-road farm vehicle.
Unlike most of its competitors from Daihatsu, Suzuki, or Honda---which used three-cylinder engines---Subaru equipped the Sambar with a smoother, water-cooled four cylinder engine.
- Engine Options: Powered by a 658cc (often rounded to 660cc) Clover EN07 inline-four engine. It came as either a standard carbureted model (approx. 40 hp) or a highly desirable clover-four supercharged version (approx. 54 hp).
- Drivetrain: Available in 2WD or part-time 4WD configurations. 4WD models feature a push-button engagement system on the gear shifter.
- Transmission: Most commonly paired with a 5-speed manual transmission featuring an Extra Low (EL) gear for rugged terrain or heavy hauling. Automatic versions utilized an early electromagnetic powder clutch eCVT system.
- Top Speed: Standard variants safely cruise between 55-60 mph (90--100 km/h). Modified or supercharged variants are capable of hitting up to 80+ mph on a flat highway.
Part of the Duncan Imports Private collection, this custom built Sambar is equipped with 4WD and has the supercharged motor.
