The 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 is widely considered one of the absolute pinnacles of the American muscle car era. It combined a distinctive, refined "coke-bottle" body profile with legendary big-block power.
For the 1967 model year, the Super Sport (SS) was its own distinct series---identifiable by the "138" prefix in the VIN---meaning a true SS 396 was built as a muscle car from the factory, rather than an upgraded Malibu trim.
The heart of the '67 Chevelle SS was the 396 cubic-inch (6.5L) big-block V8, which came in three distinct configurations depending on how the buyer spec'd the car:
- L35 (Base): Rated at 325 horsepower. It utilized a Rochester Quadrajet carburetor and hydraulic lifters, built for smooth, reliable street power.
- L34 (Mid-tier): Rated at 350 horsepower. This variant bumped up the power via a higher-lift camshaft and a larger Holley carburetor.
- L78 (Top-tier): Rated at 375 horsepower. This high-performance beast featured solid lifters, a high-compression aluminum intake, big rectangular-port heads, and a Holley 780 CFM carburetor. It was notoriously underrated and built purely to dominate drag strips.
Buyers could pair the big block with a 3-speed manual, the highly desirable Muncie 4-speed manual, or a 3-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic transmission. Power was funneled to the asphalt through a heavy-duty 12-bolt rear end.
The 1967 model year also brought major mechanical improvements, most notably the addition of optional front disc brakes for better stopping power, alongside dual-master-cylinder braking systems for safety.
While keeping the overall footprint of the 1966 model, the 1967 Chevelle received a "facelift" featuring slanted front corners, a more aggressive front grille, and an updated rear bumper wrapping under the revised taillights.
Inside, the SS could be configured with a sporty front bench seat or vinyl bucket seats accompanied by a center console and the legendary "clock on the console" option. True SS models featured twin faux-hood scoops (the "ice cream scoops") and distinctive SS 396 badging on the grille, fenders, and rear panel.
Part of the Duncan Imports collection since 2025 this all original Chevelle SS has just 20,000 actual miles.
